The celebrated BBC sitcom Waiting for God returns in a spirited stage adaptation by Michael Aitkens, inviting audiences to Bayview Retirement Village, where growing old is anything but quiet. The play follows Diana Trent, a retired photojournalist with a fierce wit and unmatched determination, as she teams up with new resident and retired accountant Tom Ballard to take on the conniving manager, Harvey Baines, and his assistant, Jane Edwards. Their schemes result in hilarious confrontations and unexpectedly heartwarming moments.
Diana’s unyielding energy and Tom’s playful nature form the heart of the production, as the duo orchestrate a series of adventures designed to give Harvey his well-deserved comeuppance. The supporting cast includes Diana’s ambitious niece Sarah, Tom’s unremarkable son Geoffrey, a dithering vicar, numerous doctors and an unwelcome undertaker – all contributing to a humorous and uplifting tale of growing old badly. Having enjoyed five successful series on English TV during the 1990s, Waiting for God now delights audiences on stage with its blend of sharp comedy and touching character moments.
