The emperor of Rome is dead. William Shakespeare’s first ever tragedy finds its spark in a battle of succession between the late leader’s impulsive and short tempered eldest son, the more mild younger son and general Titus Andronicus, who has just returned from war against the Goths and who has been entered into the election without his knowing. Titus wins but refuses the crown, remembering decades of active military duty that have taken a toll on his body and prompting him towards seeking rest, not riches. However, after nominating the emperor’s eldest to take his place, Titus soon finds himself and his family in a dangerous position when the new ruler falls in love with the Queen of the country Titus just won a war against. The stage is set for multiple revenge plots and amongst the ensuing spiral of violence, the entire empire begins to fall apart.
Director Konstantin Rasanis took the brutal Shakespearean classic and transformed it into a story that finds itself just as much in the time of the roman empire as it does today, taking place in a world where music is more prominent (and destructive) than it is in ours. What becomes of a family that is actively being torn apart, what becomes of love when faced with bone-chilling violence and what becomes of theatre when one is willing to try a new approach?
